According to local media, the hit happened in the yard of a block of flats.

Former police officer Stefankov reportedly defected to Russia to become Putin’s chief of police and was responsible for interrogating prisoners.

The city’s mayor, Ivan Federov, said in a Telegram post: “A massive explosion in the courtyard of a Melitopol skyscraper in the city center is likely the result of an FSB search.

According to preliminary information, during the ‘showdowns’ they wanted to remove one of the police collaborators – the so-called ‘Chief of the People’s Police Department of the People’s Militia’.

He continued: “Denys Stefankov is one of the 118 police traitors for whom we were preparing to confiscate all their real estate and personal property.

“Anyone who betrayed Ukraine should be clear: the Russians don’t need you. Once you’re used, you become expendable.”

While Federov has not indicated whether the ex-cop died in the blast, Ukrainian media reports he is dead.

The Telegraf news agency claims he did not survive the assassination, citing inside sources.

However, Russian media agency TASS claims Stefankov is very much alive and well.

The Interior Ministry said on Telegram: “Stormy fantasies do not give rest to fake Ukrainian media day and night.

“Denis Stefankov watches over the law in perfect order and health!”

The alleged assassination attempt comes amid a spate of targeted assassinations against Russian leaders in recent weeks.

Most recently, four top officials in Ukraine were killed in explosions last week

Lyudmila Boyko, who organized a sham referendum on joining Russia, was killed along with her husband Oleg Boyko, 46 - also a senior local official.

Another senior pro-Putin official in occupied Ukraine was killed in a car bomb while picking up his daughter from kindergarten.

And Askyar Laishev, who worked for Ukraine’s intelligence agency before switching sides in 2014, was obliterated in a car bomb blast in Luhansk earlier this month.
