Princess Charlotte is fit for a special royal title… but she’ll have to be patient

PRINCESS Charlotte will inherit a very special royal title after her father, Prince William, becomes King.

Officially known as Princess Charlotte of Cambridge – thanks to her parents the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge – Princess Charlotte already holds a huge title.

Although the six-year-old is also HRH styled, this will change and become even more epic when Prince William takes the throne.

Traditionally given to the eldest daughter of a monarch, it was introduced to mimic the French royal title of Madame Royale in the 1600s.

The current Princess Royal is Princess Anne, the Queen’s only daughter – she was given the title in 1987.

However, royal expert and author of Prince Harry: Inside Story, Duncan Larcombe, Explained TownandCountrymag.com: “It’s a title that will last a lifetime, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait at least until the incumbent Princess Royal passes away.”

Meanwhile, despite being one of the members of the Royal family, Princess Charlotte was known by a different name – Charlotte Cambridge – while attending Thomas’ School in Battersea.

This is because historically, kings and princes took their surname from their father’s title – in this case, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

In a similar fashion, her brother, Prince George, was called George Cambridge at school.

After being told enough to study, Prince Louis will go by Louis Cambridge.

The historical tradition was also adopted by her father and Prince Harry, both of whom took the surname Wales in school and in the army thanks to their father’s title, Prince of Wales.
