The prince says he didn’t see the 25 as “people” but as “chess pieces” to be taken off the board.

He also wrote that he saw the insurgents he killed as “bad guys eliminated before they could kill good.”

Now experts believe Harry should no longer be the face of the Invictus Games, which is a multi-sport event for wounded, injured or ill members of the armed forces.

The games are scheduled to take place in September in Dusseldorf, Germany.

A senior official told The Mirror: “Harry’s book has become a self-inflicted wound from which he may never recover.

“It may be a bestseller, but the damage done to its reputation, especially among the armed forces and veterans, could be irreparable.”

Meanwhile, a senior member of a veterans’ charity added: “Harry was idolized by veterans. Many who have attended the games will tell you that it saved their lives.

“But the tide turned with the release of Spare and Harry may be considered toxic by many veterans.

“If so, he may have to relinquish his patronage.”

It comes after insiders previously said Harry’s confession has significantly increased safety concerns for the entire royal family.

In his memoir, Harry said he gunned down Taliban fighters while flying Apache helicopters in southern Helmand province in 2012.

Returning to base at Camp Bastion, he reviewed the footage of his kills from the gunship’s nose-mounted camera.

Harry said the technology meant “I could always tell exactly how many enemy combatants I had killed”.

He wrote: “So my number: 25. It wasn’t a number that satisfied me. But it wasn’t a number I was ashamed of either.

“In the heat and fog of battle, I didn’t see these 25 as human beings. I had been trained to ‘differentize’ them.”

The Taliban retaliated by branding Harry a “loser” and demanding that he be brought before an “international court” for his “crimes”.
