Prince Andrew has lost the York title after anger over the settlement in Virginia Giuffre’s rape case

PRINCE Andrew was stripped of another honor after the City of York agreed to remove his title of honorary citizen.

The Underfire Royal was granted freedom from the City of York in a lavish ceremony in 1987, shortly after his marriage to Sarah Ferguson.

On Wednesday, York City Council voted to remove his status as an honorary freeman at an extraordinary full council meeting.

It took the council just 40 minutes to make the decision to strip Andrew of his titles.

One speaker described the Duke as “a complete disgrace, bringing shame wherever he goes. He must be declared persona non grata at York”.

This renewed humiliation could be the next step at the palace, which is facing calls for Andrew to relinquish his title as Duke of York and remove all remaining ties to the city.

He is the first VIP to be stripped of his liberty of honor since Jimmy Savile was posthumously stripped of his liberty by Scarborough in 2011 after revelations about his heinous crimes came to light after his death.

York Mayor Darryl Smalley said: “The removal of this honorary title sends the right message that we as a city face abuse victims.

“The next logical step now is for Prince Andrew to do the right thing and relinquish his title of Duke of York.

“If he fails to do so, the Government and Buckingham Palace must step in to remove his title and end Prince Andrew’s association with York for good.”

It follows calls for the Queen’s favorite son to relinquish his honor as Duke of York after Virginia Giuffre was accused of sexual assault against him.

The case was settled out of court in February, with the prince paying an undisclosed settlement of at least £12million.

Giuffre claimed she was trafficked by pedophile Jeffrey Epstein to have sex with Prince Andrew.

Mr Smalley added: “York’s Freedom of Honor is the highest honor we can give as a city to those who represent the best of York.

“The honor is held by many remarkable and accomplished people who wear it with pride and responsibility.

“Having stripped of his military roles and royal patronage by the Queen, we believe it is right to remove all the links Prince Andrew still has with our great city.

“I was pleased to see councilors from all parties supporting this motion and making it clear that it is no longer appropriate for Prince Andrew to represent York and its residents.”

Prince Andrew has always vigorously denied the allegations against him and his signed settlement with Ms Giuffre contained no admission of liability.

It is the latest title the Duke has lost after the Queen stripped her son of all his military and royal patronage just before his legal battle came to a sudden end.

Councilors announced they would seek to revoke Andrew’s freedom from the City of York in February, just days after announcing his settlement.

The decision was made during a meeting held at York Racecourse on Wednesday night.

More than 200,000 people thronged the streets of the ancient city for the 1987 civic ceremony that bestowed Andrew’s freedom from York.

A crowd gathered outside York Minster chanted “We Want Fergie” after inviting every family in the city to apply for tickets.

The honor, dating back hundreds of years, recognizes notable services to the city by “Persons of Distinction”.

Mr Smalley said York’s ties to the monarchy are an important part of the city’s “heritage and history”.

But he added: “The allegations and his ties to convicted offenders are incredibly serious and we are committed to evaluating all available options to ensure his ties to our city are severed.”

“We will be reaching out to MPs to voice our concerns and discuss possible avenues to end Prince Andrew’s association with York.”

Prince Andrew sparked controversy last month when he accompanied the Queen in a huge show of support at Prince Philip’s funeral.

He is also said to accompany the Queen to the Derby on the Platinum Jubilee weekend.

Insiders said the 62-year-old will be joining his mother at the Epsom race meeting in June.

A source said: “He was due to remain invisible during the Platinum Jubilee so there’s no way he’s going to be at events like Trooping the Colour.

“But the Queen needs an escort on all occasions at the moment due to her mobility issues and Andrew has earmarked the Derby as the one he will accompany her to.

“He just doesn’t seem to understand the public outcry.”
