They told Mirror: “He broke down, he broke down. If he wants to wear a navy uniform for once, let him.”

“His reputation is over, his public life is over. He’s a walking shame.”

The source took a sympathetic stance towards his old friend and defended the fallen royal family.

They said: “He served in the Royal Navy during the Falklands War and this was bestowed upon him by the Queen.

“It’s really like an honors degree.

“He has not been charged with anything. I don’t know if he’s guilty or innocent, so I think he paid a pretty heavy price.”

Andrew, who was stripped of his title by his mother last month, is never expected to return to the family front lines.
