Priest attacked, robbed at gunpoint, outside Baltimore Roman Catholic church – CBS Pittsburgh

BALTIMORE (WJZ-TV) – A priest was assaulted and robbed with a gun outside a church in the Little Italy neighborhood of Baltimore on Friday afternoon. Father Bernie Carman of the Roman Catholic Church of St. Leo’s got bruises and scratches, but thankfully is fine.

His parishioners are worried about him, especially as he has other health problems. The priest is waiting for a new kidney and has just had surgery to prepare for dialysis.

“I thought to myself, in that very moment, ‘Oh my God, he could shoot me,’” Carman said. “He can shoot this thing.”

Baltimore police said the attack happened just before 4 p.m. Friday. Father Carman said he was getting out of his car in front of the church when a man he did not know approached. “(He) ran up to me and said, ‘Give me your wallet,’ ‘ Father Carman said. “I say no.’ He pulled out his gun. He sort of kept it close to him. ”

Father Carman said the man hit the side of his head with a gun, then a woman stole his phone and the man took his wallet. He said during the incident, he fell to the ground and hit his head on the wall outside the church. Father Carman said: “I think the full impact of it will come because Sunday night, all of a sudden, I felt extremely tired.

His parishioners could not believe it had happened.

“It makes me very sad because Father Bernie is a good man doing a lot of good in the world,” said parishioner Marie Rippey. “We prayed for him and now we also have this to pray for.”

Father Carman said he held no ill will towards his attackers. He just wants them to have better options. “What about considering a life change?” Father Carman said. “How about another career? Because I think it will be much better in the end. ”
