‘Pressure is rising cost of energy prices’ not race for WSL title, says Chelsea boss Hayes

EMMA HAYES have dismissed suggestions that Chelsea are feeling the heat of the title race ahead of their clash with leaders Arsenal.

And the head of The Blues believes that Manchester United, Tottenham and Reading can be potential dark horses for the WSL throne.

Friday’s game at Kingsmeadow will be the third time the rivals have faced each other this term, with Chelsea won their most recent encounter – the 2021 FA Cup final.

The champions, who had Ji So-yun back from Asian Cup duty, hope to avenge their early-season loss to Arsenal, with the Gunners eager to open a five-point gap at the summit. .

But Hayes has dismissed the idea that the game is the one that decides the title and believes there could be more important moments ahead.

The Chelsea director, 44, said: “The twists and turns will be all over regardless of the outcome. It’s not a game Arsenal need to win.

“A draw or even a loss in both directions does not necessarily define the season.

“Both teams know it’s a derby, but there’s still a way to go and it’s still too early to determine which way the title will go.”

The home team will be without captain Magda Eriksson with the Swedish midfielder returning to fitness after injury.

A home win would see the title holders move into pole position with a game in hand, but only one point ahead.

And Hayes insists Chelsea are feeling pressure in their pursuit of their fifth WSL title.

“The pressure is on the rising cost of energy prices for people or people who have to make money at times when things are tight,” Hayes added.

“This is not pressure; this is great fun. It’s entertainment and yes, it’s competitive.

“I’m confident in the way we’re playing. I just want to see consistency in our performance.”

No one wants situations where it’s just a two-horse race and while I’m not a bettor, the race is far from over.

This season’s title and the top three have emerged as some of the most intense the WSL has seen in recent years.

Only three points difference People unite – who took a place in the Champions League – from Read is ranked fifth and one level behind Tottenham.

The Royals are also eight points behind the Gunners and have played one game less than the leaders.

And drawing at Kingsmeadow can be seen Tottenham reduce Arsenal’s lead to four points if they beat Birmingham City on Sunday.

A win for Chelsea would put them at the top of the table with a lead and a game in hand

Hayes added: “What a fantastic season both teams (Man United and Tottenham) have had and I don’t think you can count Reading out with a game in hand.

“It is difficult to call what the result will be, but this is what we want for the tournament.

“Nobody wants situations where it’s just a two-horse race, and while I’m not a bettor this (race) is far from over.”

A derby between Hayes’ side and Jonas Eidevall is likely to see Leah Williamson, 24, return to Arsenal’s 11th team.

And the Gunners centre-back thinks the Gunners are seen as ‘underdogs’ for the title even though they have been ahead of their rivals for most of this season.

Talking to Ian Wright on his Wrighty’s House podcast, the British tennis player said: “The first time we played against Chelsea in the first game of the year, we shocked everyone.

“At the top of the table we are still looked down upon, and I don’t think they (our opponents) see us as real opponents.

“But I’m happy to take that weakness to win those games because if our quality shows, we’ll grow more and more.”
