PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – President Biden will address the nation on Monday, announcing the action the United States will take to address the new Omicron variant of COVID-19.
This comes after President Biden was recently briefed by his COVID-19 Task Force on the Omicron variant in the Oval Office.
President Biden said that starting today, the United States will limit travel from South Africa and seven other countries.
The World Health Organization has labeled the newly discovered strain of bacteria a ‘worrisome variant.’
This variant was first detected in South Africa, and the World Health Organization emphasizes that further research is needed to determine if the variant is more contagious, if it causes more severe disease, and whether it can evade the vaccine or not.
More and more countries are also trying to figure out how to deal with this new variant.
In fact, at least a dozen countries have confirmed cases of the new strain, and several more are reporting suspected cases.
Currently, around 45 countries have imposed travel restrictions from several African countries.
Dr Anthony Fauci said it will take about two weeks to know if the Omicron variant is resistant to the current COVID-19 vaccine.
Doctors say that right now, vaccination and wearing masks are two things you can do to protect yourself.
