He is accused of refusing to wait or park his £80,000 white Range Rover and walk less than five minutes to his home in Liverpool.

Shocked employees at paving company Sefton called police after the footballer’s vehicle crashed through a barrier and struck an eight-wheel asphalt machine on December 5.

Police quickly arrived and spoke to the 31-year-old footballer, who has 13 England caps, at his home.

Sources said the former Spurs and Crystal Palace winger could face dangerous driving charges while officers search for footage and the investigation continues.

It came days after his return to the UK after being part of ITV’s team of experts at the start of the World Cup in Qatar.

A source told The Sun: “No one could believe their eyes. Andros, who was calmly commenting on our screens days earlier, was beside himself with anger. The red fog descended.

“Contractors paved the road less than five minutes from his property. It was an unfortunate moment when he stopped at a roadblock. The asphalt was hot and was laid in front of him.

“It was impossible to drive a vehicle across the street. Workers said he could wait or park and walk the short distance to his home.

“But Andros didn’t want that. He yelled, “I have to go to my shitty house.” And with that, he threw down the barrier, halted traffic, and drove down the side of the sidewalk to avoid the construction sites.

“But he was traveling at high speed and his car hit an asphalt spreader. It was driven by a worker who was left in total shock.”

Police said there were no reports of injuries, adding: “The driver of the car has been identified and spoken to and the investigation is ongoing.”

Townsend was contacted for comment.
