Three people were pulled from the water and a 60-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after Saturday’s incident.

Two others, including a heavily pregnant woman, were taken to hospital but later died, police officers say.

Authorities believe the boat carrying 12 tourists and two crew members may have capsized due to large waves created by a nearby tugboat.

More than 20 firefighters, rescue workers and border guards rushed to rescue passengers from the water.

Mariusz Chrzanowski of the Gdansk Police said: “Preliminary results show that the tourist boat with 14 people on board capsized as a result of a high wave, probably caused by tugboats working nearby.

“The boat probably got caught in a strong water current caused by the drag anchor. This pushed it violently and capsized.”

Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, Mayor of Gdańsk, called the incident a “huge tragedy” and said the cause would be clarified “as soon as possible”.

She said: “I am sorry for everyone affected by this tremendous tragedy and I send my condolences to the victims of the accident and their families.

“I believe that the services will explain the causes of this terrible accident as soon as possible.

“I can assure you that the injured will receive professional medical and psychological care.”
