A POSSIBLE situation with gunmen active is unfolding at a naval base where a suspect is reportedly barricaded inside.
A perimeter has been put in place and neighbors in the area are being urged to stay indoors.
The New Orleans Police Department confirmed to The Sun that they are responding to reports of shots being fired at the 4400 block of Dauphine Street.
According to reports, the police area will be set up near St. Claude and Poland Avenue.
According to the police, several people were interrogated.
No casualties are reported at this time.
Residents in the area reported hearing more than 50 gunshots around 9 p.m.
The Navy closed the base in 2011.
The city of New Orleans acquired it in 2013, but it has been vacant since then.
There have been previous incidents at the abandoned naval base, dating back to 2018, when a man reportedly told police he had been kidnapped and pistol whipped at the base.
In August 2020, a woman’s body was dumped at the base after she was murdered by two men who have since been charged.
The base is located in the Bywater neighborhood of New Orleans.
The Sun has reached out to the Navy and the New Orleans Police Department for comment.
