“If you meet Mary, you immediately know what kind of person she is. She’s really bubbly, full of energy, fun and truly looking for all the positive things in life,” said Union Mission Director Dan Carney.

Union Mission outside Latrobe is where Mary Bathurst, 42, dedicates her time to those in need.

“The energy she provides is really uplifting especially for our residents who are going through very difficult times,” he said.

But Monday night, Bathurst was the one going through a tough time after state police said the pickup truck driver hit her while she was dumping trash from the Union Mission on Harrison Avenue.

“It hit a woman with the front right part of the vehicle, launching her,” said soldier Steve Limani.

The barrier Bathurst flew into was damaged by the impact of her body. Witnesses said the truck driver had stopped.

“In this particular case, it was a white man getting out of his car and talking to someone, asking if the person in the crash was okay,” Limani said.

Later, the soldiers said that the driver did not stay long. Police said the truck was an older, red Dodge Ram 1500 with likely significant front-right damage.

Bathurst remains in hospital with significant medical and orthopedic injuries and while she is expected to survive, she faces a long road to recovery. Her colleague meanwhile had a note for the driver of the pickup that hit their friend: “It’s really important to everyone, to yourself, to Mary, to the family.
