Pokimane banned on Twitch after streaming Avatar: The Last Airbender

Even the oldest of us can fall. On Friday night, Imane “Pokimane” Anys, one of the most popular streamers on Twitch with over 8.5 million followers, was banned from the platform after streaming the popular animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The cause of the ban is unknown at this time, but is likely the result of a DMCA strike.

Based on Twitchtracker, streamers watched and streamed the Nickelodeon show to approximately 25,000 concurrent viewers peak during the live stream. Anys did not directly comment on her other social media platforms on how long the ban would last. However, at the time of publication, Anys’ Twitch channel is inactive. Twitch has a three-hit policy on DMCA claims, so her channel may be reinstated.

Anys is the face of the Twitch brand at a time when other popular streamers like it Ludwig Ahgren has left YouTube. In 2020, streamers signed multi-year contracts deal to stay on Twitch. After the ban, Anys joking on Twitter that “the nation of fire has struck,” a reference to a popular meme on the show that she may have been banned from streaming.

Broadcasters and TV commentators are a newer trend on Twitch. Called “meta TV,” this became a popular way to capture viewers’ attention. In December, popular variety streamers like Félix “xQc” Lengyel and Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker streamed views of the competitive cooking show Super Chef on their channels.

However, this strategy is quite risky, as Twitch has a history of removing content after receiving takedown requests from companies. In 2020, the streaming platform encourages streamers to remove content for compliance Copyright law for music. Twitch responds to notices from copyright owners that have submitted DMCA requests. In this case, ViacomCBS owns Avatar: The Last Airbender so their legal team will make a claim.

A DMCA attack on such a popular streamer could have a huge impact on Twitch’s larger TV meta trend. While Anys’ channel is likely to be reinstated, it remains to be seen whether other major variety broadcasters will continue to respond to shows with the takedown threat lurking around them.
