CARNEGIE, Pa. (KDKA) – Plumbers are busy assisting customers with pipes that are frozen and damaged by extreme cold in the Pittsburgh area.
Many people woke up to frozen pipes on Thursday morning and risk remains a concern as another deep freeze is coming on Friday night.
“It took a couple of days in a row in really cold temperatures to get the pipes frozen. So that definitely keeps us busy,” said David Wahl, co-owner of Wahl Home Heating, Cooling and Plumbing in Carnegie
Wahl said the company has seen damage repairs cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars. He has some tips that can prevent your pipes from freezing.
The first tip is to keep the water in your pipes moving.
“When we see the single digits, that’s when I go and I’ll turn the faucet on and let it drip and just let it drip consistently. The cost of a plumber service call compared to letting your faucet drip for a day or two, it’s probably a lot cheaper to just let that faucet drip,” Wahl says, “It just needs to drip. drops, drip slowly, just keep the water moving. You can do it in the laundry, the bathroom, any sink.”
The next tip is to open your cupboards.
“The kitchen cabinets, the vanity in the bathroom, if the pipes are covered, they can open those doors,” he said.
Experts also suggest that homeowners should purchase insulation to line the pipes. Wahl told KDKA that it is important to close the internal valves that control the water supply to the outer pipe. Then drain the remaining water.
If pipes are frozen in your home or business, do not attempt to defrost them yourself.
“Try opening all the faucets to see if they start to drip. If they notice water running through the ceiling or dripping somewhere, call the water company to turn off the unit. Then call the plumber to fix it,” he said.
If you plan to be away from home for an extended period of time, the Pittsburgh Water & Sewerage Authority requires that your main shutoff valve be closed and the system flushed by opening the faucet and flushing the toilet.
