PlayStation Named in a Sexist Classroom Action Suit

PlayStation is just the latest game company to be sued for sexism.
PlayStation was charged with sexism and legal termination in a new lawsuit filed in a California court on Monday.
The lawsuit was brought by Emma Majo, a former IT security analyst who claims she was discriminated against during her time at Sony. She accused Sony of ditching her for a promotion, paying her less than men working in similar roles and firing her when she complained to human resources.
“[Majo] allege that female employees or identified as female have not been paid equally as male employees with substantially similar job classifications, functions, titles and/or duties; not being paid equally to male employees doing substantially similar work; were denied equal pay to male employees of similar positions due to the suppression of lower pay; and/or ad disapproval, “read court documents first reported by Axios.
“Sony tolerates and maintains a work environment that discriminates against female employees, including female employees who identify as female. Female employees continue to be subjected to illegal treatment in terms of pay and work opportunities. . Furthermore, Sony’s policies and procedures have an ongoing impact on female workers.”
The suit specifically refers to Majo that has been passed on for promotions many times and is often ignored by her male managers. Her contract was terminated after raising issues of gender bias in a formal complaint, although Sony has announced that her termination was due to the closure of an internal department – department that Majo wasn’t even a part of.
Majo’s attorney plans to invoke the U.S. Equal Pay Act and the California Private Attorney General Act, which would allow private citizens to sue companies for violations of labor laws. She is currently looking for others to join the class action lawsuit against Sony.
The video game industry has come under closer scrutiny as many companies find themselves fighting very similar lawsuits. Activision Blizzard is the first to come to mind, with the company allegedly having “frat . boy workplace culture“have been attributed to multiple rapes and even a suicide. Riot was sued for sexism in 2018, though that lawsuit was eventually brought to arbitration — another fact many in the game industry are up against. And don’t forget Ubisoft, including a separate lawsuit about sexism and a Toxic working environment that led to the departure of few senior executive.
