Pittsburgh Maulers return as part of USFL revival – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Maulers are back!

They are one of eight teams in the new version of the USFL.

The original team didn’t last long but the maulers made a big impression in this city. Purple and orange with the emblem of a steelworker wielding a sledgehammer, lasted only a year here and were the worst team in the league in the 1980s.

Brian Woods, USFL 2nd Generation Executive President of Soccer, thinks Pittsburgh is the perfect fit at this time.

“Pittsburgh is definitely an area where the country has always supported professional football, and Maulers is a very unique and important brand of the USFL,” Woods said.

The season starts on April 16.

It will be a ten-game season with post-season but if you want to get into a game, you won’t see the Maulers in Pittsburgh for at least a year.

All eight teams will play at one venue in Birmingham, Alabama in year one. It’s part of a plan to make sure the league survives this season unlike other failed leagues

“We’re looking to be strategic. We want to make sure that the markets have what they need in terms of resources, be it potential domestic investors. If the right factors come into play after the first season, there’s a good chance Pittsburgh could see the Maulers in Pittsburgh,” according to Woods.

The big question is, if and when the maulers come to Pittsburgh, where will they play?

Highmark Stadium might be their best bet but it might be too small. I would imagine the Heinz field would be in the conversation but that might be too big. Other possibilities would be Robert Morris, Duquesne, or a high school.

“Ensuring that we have the right vehicles specifically for gaming purposes is important. So that’s a conversation that hasn’t been started yet but hopefully can be started in the near term so we can finally find the right spot to play the home game,” Woods said. .

The USFL failed the first time around because the league tried to compete with the NFL.

The NFL is king and this time the USFL is smart enough to realize it.

“I think you can make a strong argument that the USFL stayed in the spring, just the first iteration of the USFL that I talked about in the 1980s. If they had stayed in the spring, they might still be here today,” Woods said

The league will hold a draft on February 22 and 23.
