Pitt Sticks With Jeff Capel Despite Court Struggles – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh is sticking with Jeff Capel.
Athletic director Heather Lyke said Friday the Panthers remains committed to Capel, who has been 51-69 in the four seasons since taking over from Kevin Stallings, including the 11-21 mark this year.

Lyke said in a statement that she and Capel “share the disappointment of this past season and look forward to continuing to build on this show a source of immense pride for Pitt” but added that she “believes I thought Jeff would continue to evaluate and evaluate every aspect of our program and work tirelessly to continue building it the right way. ”
The Panthers have endured six consecutive losing seasons since Jamie Dixon left for TCU, his alma mater, in 2016. The stagnation lasted only two before being fired. Capel was brought in to restore the show to credibility, but building momentum has been difficult.

Pitt’s seasons under Capel followed a similar pattern. The Panthers played well early in the Atlantic Coast Conference game and faded into the period. February’s three-game winning streak included one win at North Carolina, followed by five consecutive losses through the end of the season, the last four having at least 20 points.
Capel lamented after being tricked by Boston University in the opening round of the ACC Tournament that the Panthers needed to upgrade their roster if they wanted to compete. Port transfer offers a quick fix but time is running out.
“We will do what it takes to become known as a program that will overcome opposition and compete with unmatched difficulty and intensity,” Capel said in a statement. said. “We have the opportunity to turn things around quickly by attacking every aspect of the season from player development and recruitment to style of play and coaching philosophy.”
