Pitbull discovers the little boy’s fate after rescuing him and biting his mother who threw him into the river

A 27-year-old mother reportedly tried to drown her sons, ages nine and five, on Thursday.

A pit bull named Buddy reportedly intervened and pulled the nine-year-old boy from a river after his mother allegedly tried to drown him.

Buddy was arrested by Murray River Council rangers on Thursday after the incident, but police officers said they have no intention of euthanizing the dog after determining he was “acting in the proper defense of the nine-year-old boy” who is now in hospital located. Buddy will be returned to his owners.

“It is likely that the dog gave adequate defense to the nine-year-old boy who was later hospitalized,” Murray River Council interim director-general Margot Stork said in a news release, according to the Riverine Herald. ‘The NSW Police have advised the Council that they will not seek an order to destroy this animal.'”

“The dog is doing well and is currently being cared for at a Murray River Council facility,” added Stork.

“Since the incident, we have microchipped the dog and are working with the dog’s owner to register the dog and create the appropriate conditions for the dog to return home.

“The owner has visited the dog at the community facility and is working with us to ensure all obligations under the Companion Animals Act are met.”
Buddy’s owners created a GoPetition after his arrest last week, according to the Riverine Herald. In the description, the petition reported the incident and argued that Buddy was actually trying to save the boy:

On March 2, 2017, a mother of two attempted to drown her children in the Murray River near Moama. At this mother’s selfish attempt to drown her 2 cubs, the dog reacted and tried to save the cubs, biting the eldest cub while trying to save it, unfortunately it couldn’t save the youngest cub and also bit the mother . Buddy is his name and he is a pit bull mix and has since been confiscated by his owners who are dismayed not only at what this mother has done but also that our dog was confiscated when he was supposed to be [labeled] instead a hero. Buddy has no history as a dangerous dog and has certainly never bitten anyone and has never been impounded for anything. Buddy is a member of our family and has grown up with children his entire life and has been at most [gentele] Dog, he clearly saw a child in need and is trying to help, dogs don’t have hands to help like us humans, they have to use their teeth and that’s the way it is [portrayed] as [if] This dog attacked the boy.

The petition garnered more than 45,000 signatures before it was closed.
The body of the boy, believed to be the five-year-old, was found in the river on Saturday and the nine-year-old is being treated at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
Her mother, who cannot be named at this time for legal reasons, is charged with murder and attempted murder.
