PHILIP Baker Hall, the beloved Hard Eight and Seinfeld star, has died as tributes poured in for the ‘Lieutenant Bookman’ actor.
Hall’s death was announced by Los Angeles Times Sportswriter Sam Farmer, who said the actor passed away peacefully on Sunday.
“My neighbor, friend and one of the smartest, most talented and kindest people I have ever met, Philip Baker Hall, passed away peacefully last night,” Farmer said on Twitter.
“He was surrounded by loved ones. The world has an empty space within it.”
A cause of death was not given.
A prolific actor, Hall has starred in several films such as Say Anything…, Secret Honor, Hard Eight, Duck, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Bruce Almighty, In Good, among others Company, The Amityville Horror, and The Matador.
Among his most famous roles was his portrayal of Lt. Joe Bookman in the third season of the classic ’90s sitcom Seinfeld.
In the episode, Bookman works as a library cop dealing with library offenders and tracks down Jerry Seinfeld for an overdue book, which he claims the comedian hasn’t returned to since 1971.
His dedication to his job and his coincidental last name are the reason for Jerry’s dismissive attitude toward him.
RIP ‘LT BOOKMAN’
Hundreds of fans on social media paid their respects to the beloved actor after news of his death broke.
“Philip Baker Hall had one of the funniest scenes of Seinfeld ever. Arguably funnier than anything the cast have ever done. And that was because of how he sold the scene. Absolutely brilliant. Peepees and Weewees joy boy,” shared one fan.
A second fan wrote: “Philip Baker Hall just passed away. To Seinfeld fans, he was Lieutenant Bookman, the library policeman, and responsible for one of the greatest library defenses in history: ‘Maybe we can live without libraries, you and me, folks.’
“May his memory be a blessing ❤️💔❤️🩹.”
Another person tweeted: “RIP Philip Baker Hall. An incredible actor in so many ways, and I will always remember him for one of the greatest, if not the greatest, sitcom performances of all time as the library cop in Seinfeld.”
Hall lived to be 90 years old. He is survived by his wife, Holly Wolfle, and their two daughters, Adella and Ann.
