Philadelphia hosts Red Bulls in showdown to open Saturday MLS knockouts – NBC10 Philadelphia

The last time the Philadelphia Union faced the New York Red Bulls to open the Major League knockout stages was in 2019. And it was memorable – especially for Union.

Philadelphia went 3-1 down in the first half, only to come back and win 4-3 in extra time. Marco Fabian scored the winning goal in the 105th minute. It was Union’s first playoff win.

“I have vivid memories of the 2019 game against Red Bull. Obviously we made playoff history for the club to win the first game,” said Union captain Alejandro Bedoya. But it’s a whole new year and a whole new season, a whole new team with different players, so I hope that we will perform at a level where we won’t be behind. 2-0 or 3-1 to have to come back. ”

The two teams face off again to open the knockout round on Saturday as the tournament resumes play after an international break.

Philadelphia claimed second seed in the Eastern Conference after Supporters’ Shield winner New England, having a bye opening round. This is Union’s fourth consecutive trip to the knockout stages.

Last year, after winning the Shield of Supporters, the Coalition fell to the Revolution in the opening round.

The Red Bulls, already 12 years in a row in the post-season, finished with seventh seed.

The two teams have met three times this season, with the first win at home, followed by a draw at the Red Bull Arena.

“We’ve had some interesting appearances over the past few months, we’ve had three chances to win against Philly, and right now we have one more chance,” the Red coach said. Bulls, said Gerhard Struber. “We’ve always come very close to taking the points against Philly.”

The two teams have never met in the following season but they have met twice this season.

The two teams played twice in the regular season, with NYCFC taking their first win before drawing in Atlanta. They’ve met once before in the knockout stages, with a 4-1 aggregate win over Atlanta in the Eastern Conference’s two-leg semi-final first leg in 2018.

Atlanta went on to win the MLS Cup that year against the Portland Timbers.

NYCFC, its sixth consecutive playoff appearance, fell to Orlando in the opening round last year.

Fourth seed NYCFC is on a five-match unbeaten streak into the knockout stages. The team is led by Valentin “Taty” Castellanos, who won the Golden Boot this season with 19 goals. He also had eight assists.

Josef Martinez has 12 goals this season for fifth seed Atlanta.

5th seed Minnesota has won both games against the Timbers this season, extending a seven-game unbeaten run in this streak. Fourth seed Portland hasn’t won against the Loons since 2018.

The Timbers won the MLS Cup in 2015 and runner-up in 2018. This is the fifth consecutive season they have progressed to the post-season.

The Loons are playing in the post-season for the third year in a row. They won their first playoff game last year in the opening round against Colorado, then beat Sporting KC in the conference semifinals before falling to the Sounders.

Felipe Mora leads the Timbers with 11 goals while Robin Lod has nine for the Loons.

Nashville earned a third seed this year after becoming one of seven expansion teams that made it to the knockout stages last year.

The two sides have never met in the knockout stages, have faced each other 3 times this season, and each time the result was a draw. Nashville has finished with 18 draws this season to claim the league’s record.

Sixth seed Orlando reached the knockout stages with a 2-0 Decisive Day win over Montreal to end a four-game winless streak.

Hany Mukhtar has had 16 goals for Nashville this season, including two from direct free kicks.

Nany and Daryl Dike each have 10 goals for Orlando this season.

The two teams have met twice during the season with each win at home. They have met three times in the post-season, most recently in 2019 when the Sounders won 2-0 in the Western Conference semifinals.

The second-seeded Sounders have advanced to the knockout stages in each of their 13 seasons in the league, in the most consecutive playoff appearances in MLS history.

Seattle has reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning the championship in 2016 and 2019. Last year, the Sounders made it to the finals but lost to Columbus.

Seventh-seeded RSL has twice reached the MLS Cup title match, winning it in 2009.

Raul Ruidiaz leads the Sounders with 17 goals this year. He has nine goals and six assists in 10 post-season games of his career.

Damir Kreilach leads the RSL with 16 goals this season.

The winner of the opening match between Portland and Minnesota will play top-seeded Rapids in the Western Conference semifinals on Thanksgiving in Colorado.
