Philadelphia bans pre-work marijuana drug testing January 1 – CBS Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – This Saturday, January 1, Philadelphia will implement a new ordinance banning most employers from requiring marijuana drug testing.

As currency editor Jon Delano explains, this is the first bill of its kind in Pennsylvania.

Thirty-four states and the District of Columbia have legalized the use of medical marijuana, including Pennsylvania. Nineteen states and counties have legalized recreational marijuana, but not Pennsylvania.

Whether you use marijuana recreationally or medically, it shows up in a drug test — and that’s why Philadelphia took action.

Since the war on drugs in the 1980s, many employers have required both their employees and potential job applicants to take a drug test.

With a few exceptions, on January 1, cannabis testing will no longer be authorized by other Philadelphia companies and employers.

The city of brotherhood will join New York City and the state of Nevada in banning marijuana testing completely before work.

There are some exceptions for law enforcement personnel, commercial vehicle drivers, and those caring for medical patients, children, and people with disabilities.

Philadelphia City Councilman Derek Green, who wrote the ordinance that passed last April and went into effect on New Year’s Day, said his focus is on medical marijuana.

“Cannabis is a unique product. Unlike alcohol and other things, it metabolizes in your system very differently,” says Green.

“We’re having this conversation across the commonwealth and in general assembly about whether we allow adult use of cannabis.”

“But for me, people who really need medical marijuana, especially to improve their quality of life, shouldn’t be restricted from getting a job because that’s what we all want to see. ”

Again, this ordinance applies only to Philadelphia employers. Local cannabis advocates here told KDKA they are assessing whether to promote the practice in Pittsburgh.
