Phil Mickelson “spent $40 million gambling” and spent his wealth on mansions, private jets and a T-Rex SKULL, the book states

PHIL MICKELSON suffered huge gambling losses of around $40 million over four years, according to a bombastic new biography.

The US golf star, 51, is currently on a self-imposed break from playing and missed his first Masters tournament in 28 years in April.

Mickelson was slammed for his comments about the Saudi Golf League, in which he took a break from golf after making a humble apology.

Now a new book has examined the finances of the six-time Major winner, who won his last major gong at the PGA Championship in 2021.

Written by former Sports Illustrated golf journalist Lan Shipnuck, it claims Mickelson lost a whopping $40 million gambling between 2010 and 2014.

Shipnuck estimates the golfer was making more than that amount every year during this phase of his illustrious career.

But he believes Mickelson’s finances may well be in the red, despite huge earnings from tournament wins and sponsorship deals.

Write in his book “Phil: The Gripping (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar”Said Shipnuck, “Mickelson’s love of gambling is fundamental to understanding his playing style as a golfer.

“That could also explain the Saudi seduction.

“During those peak earnings years, his earnings were estimated at just over $40 million a year.

“It’s an obscene amount of money, but after paying his taxes (including the California tariffs, which he publicly railed against), he was left with, huh, low 20?

“THE T-REX SKULL WAS A GIFT”

“Then he had to cover his plane and mansions as well as his agent, caddy, pilot, chef, personal trainer, swing trainer and various others.

“Throw in all the other expenses of a great life — like an actual T. rex skull as a birthday present — and that leaves, eh, $10 million?

“According to the government audit, that’s about as much as Mickelson averaged in annual gambling losses. And we don’t know what we don’t know.”

Mickelson’s love of the high life is well documented, with a net worth of around $400 million as of 2022 and an extensive real estate portfolio.

This includes a property in the exclusive town of Jupiter, Florida where his neighbors are Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson.

Mickelson also owns a stunning $42 million Gulfstream private jet and even holds his own pilot’s license.

More akin to a flying house than a jet, the aircraft features bedrooms, entertainment spaces, two bathrooms and an expanded space to accommodate the 6ft 3 star upright.

But his most unusual possession is a T-Rex skull, which he received as a birthday present from wife Amy in 2008.

Phil told Golf Digest in 2009, “That was my birthday present from Amy.

“This is the coolest thing I’ve ever gotten. Sometimes my kids and I just sit in my office and talk about what the world was like 68 million years ago.

“I do not know [what it’s worth]. Four or five people have bid on it, but it’s not for sale.

“Talk about giving to the man who has everything.”

Mickelson was spotted practicing his game last week after Lefty was reportedly set to defend his title at the PGA Championship later this month.

His agent Steve Loy said in a statement: “Phil has no specific plans at this time as to when or where he will play.

“Any measures taken in no way reflect a final decision made, but keep all options open.”

Phil: The Rip-Roaring (and Unauthorized!) Biography of Golf’s Most Colorful Superstar is published by Simon & Schuster and will be released on May 17th.
