The Leeds Doctors raced to treat him, and Koch was initially able to continue after having his head bandaged.

Half an hour later, Koch went down again and this time he was forced to retire because he felt the effects of the collision.

The PFA say the decision to let Koch play puts the player at risk and they have called for a ‘temporary replacement due to concussion’ to give medical staff more time to thoroughly examine the players.

Surname tweeted: “The injury to Leeds United’s Robin Koch proves once again that current concussion protocols in football are not prioritizing player safety.

“The ‘if in doubt, get them out’ protocol ‘was not consistently applied in the pressurized environment of elite competitive football.

“We regularly see cases of players returning to play with the possibility of a traumatic brain injury, only to be removed shortly after when symptoms have markedly worsened.

“As the representative voice of players in England, we have made it clear to @TheIFAB that we would like to see the introduction of temporary concussion replacement products.

“Temporary concussion substitutes will allow medical teams more time and the right environment to make an initial assessment.

“The introduction of temporary substitutes will allow the game to restart without either side being disadvantaged in terms of numbers, reducing pressure on the players and medical team to make quick decisions on the situation. whether an injured player continues or not.

“Simply put, the current rules set forth by @TheIFAB don’t work and players are at risk.”
