Pep Guardiola says Lionel Messi is still a notch above Erling Haaland as Man City sensation ‘needs all his mates’

PEP GUARDIOLA insists Erling Haaland is still not at Lionel Messi’s level as the Manchester City striker ‘needs all his mates’.

Haaland, 22, scored his third hat-trick in eight Premier League games in Sunday’s 6-3 win over Manchester United.

His tally since joining the club is a staggering 17 goals in 11 games.

But despite his stunning start in England, Guardiola believes Messi remains a step above Haaland.

After the Manchester derby, the City manager was asked if he felt the same way for the Norwegian as for Messi that they will score in every game.

To which he replied: “The difference might be that Erling needs all his buddies for it. When he gets there, it’s incredible.

“[But] Messi had the ability to do it himself.”

Haaland is currently averaging well over a goal per game and is on course to break the Prem record for most goals in a single campaign – which currently stands at 34 and is held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole.

If he maintains his quota of 1.75 league goals per game, he would finish the season with an impressive 67.

Messi’s best return in a LaLiga season was 50 goals for Barcelona in 2011/12.

The Argentine also managed 23 more in other competitions, taking his tally for the season to a paltry 73.

As well as being a goalscorer, Messi is also one of the greatest playmakers of all time – he provided 32 assists in the same 2011/12 season.

Haaland has had three assists since arriving at City – two of them in Phil Foden’s line-up against United at the weekend.

Next up for the Norwegian giants and Premier League champions is a home game against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday.

They then host Southampton in the league on Saturday.
