If you’re checking out the self-service checkout at the grocery store, chances are you have a free-floating item or two.

These items, like fresh produce and baked goods, typically do not have barcodes.

Instead, they have something called Price Look-up or PLU codes, Jill wrote.

At the self-checkout, you can usually search for products and baked goods by picture, name or PLU code.

What you may not know is that the PLU code is usually readily available on the product sticker or label.

Usually it’s just four or five digits.

So instead of having to search for an item and enter it by name, you can enter the PLU code found on your product.

This can save you time during self-checkout, especially when you need to request a lot of fresh produce.

Cashiers tend to memorize many PLU codes to speed up the checkout process.

But the once-a-week buyer doesn’t have the same knowledge.

However, it’s important to be cautious when using self-checkout, as employees have been advised to be on the lookout for suspicious activity that could be linked to the “banana trick” shoplifting method.

The banana trick is a tactic used by a customer who scans an expensive item with a code for a cheaper product like bananas in order to get the product cheaper.

This is just a ploy that could get self-checkout shoppers into trouble, even if they had no intention of stealing.
