People are only just learning real reason Snapchat is yellow – but the meaning behind ghost symbol is more mind-blowing

SNAPCHAT users have just been informed of the real reason the popular platform’s logo is a white ghost on a yellow background.
If you’ve ever wondered why Snapchat’s unique logo is like this, you’re not alone.

The iconic logo has garnered attention since the platform first launched in 2011.
And since then, the design, which shows the outline of a ghost against a yellow background, hasn’t changed much.
Surely the logo is one of the most recognizable in the world thanks to the popularity of Snapchat, which has 375 million users every day.
Where exactly does this logo come from? Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel broke it down.

THE GHOST
The most notable part of Snapchat’s logo is the ghost — and it was designed by Speigel himself.
Spiegel actually drew the simple ghost outline after being inspired by Wu-Tang Clan member Ghostface Killah.
In fact, the ghost has a name: Ghostface Chillah, per SlashGear.
Speigel allegedly designed the ghost for the predecessor app “Picaboo” before the launch of Snapchat.
Picaboo worked similarly to Snapchat, in that users sent a photo that disappeared when opened.
Snapchat’s ghost design has changed slightly over the years. Originally it had two eyes and a tongue sticking out.
Over the years, the design became more minimalistic, eventually morphing into the logo we know today.
THE YELLOW BACKGROUND
Regarding the yellow background, Speigel said he chose it because no other logo used that color at the time.
Others have speculated that Speigel chose yellow because it’s a lighthearted and fun color.
The luminosity of Snapchat’s yellow tone also immediately draws the eye to the logo.
