People are just realizing that leaving four everyday items in your car could have explosive consequences

A handful of unsuspecting household items left in a hot car can start a fire or explode if the interior temperature is too high.

Even though summer is just around the corner, it’s important to watch out for a few everyday items that can explode if left in a hot car.

The first item listed by automotive Instagram user @kursusmengemudimakassar was a lighter.

While lighter fluid is flammable, there is also a risk of burns if the fluid is exposed to direct sunlight for too long.

According to a post on GEICO’s Living blog, the chances of a lighter starting a fire aren’t all that high, but you shouldn’t risk leaving flammable liquids in a hot car.

Especially when the interior of a car can get up to 150 degrees on a 95 degree day.

The next item on his list was a loading bench.

High temperatures can not only reduce a battery’s overall capacity, but can also cause the battery to leak or rupture.

Battery acid is extremely corrosive and dangerous to humans if inhaled. Therefore, it is better to leave batteries in the house.

The third item listed was anything reflective, like water or perfume bottles.

These can concentrate the strong rays of the sun and cause a fire – similar to holding a magnifying glass in the sunlight.

While the dashboard or seats themselves are unlikely to catch fire, papers or other flammable materials near the bottles can pose a problem.

Finally, gas-filled snack bags like chip bags won’t cause a fire, but they can explode and wreak havoc on your car’s interior.
