Atletico Madrid played their typical game, slowing down and trying to win every last ball.

Diego Simeone has strangled teams this way all his career.

Ferdinand and Scholes have now claimed the big difference between the Argentinian head coach and Rangnick is the main reason Atletico have reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Speaking after the match on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “What was the difference between the two teams today?

“The Atletico team have a bunch of dependable men who will do whatever the manager asks of them.

“They understood what they were doing and they worked together as a team.

“Meanwhile, the other team – Man Utd – are looking at each other and saying, ‘who would take a magic trick out of their hat?’

“[Cristiano] Ronaldo did it over the weekend.

“They don’t think about how the team will get us through everything… it’s always an individual shining moment.

“It’s a very different way of doing things.”

Scholes, a classmate of Ferdinand’s, concurs with the criticism for Rangnick – saying United must hire a new coach to stop their terrible slide towards mediocrity.

The former Reds midfielder added: “It comes from leadership. It comes from a coach who demands it and takes that away from you.

“I don’t want to continue pursuing this manager, but how he was chosen to coach this club – for six months, six weeks or six games – I don’t know.

“The coach is an important part of it.

“Finding the right coach for this team is huge.

“This is a terrible group of players, but give them structure and some real talent on the team.

“They’re not as talented as the teams above, we know that…

“But the first thing this club needs to do to get close to winning the league is find the right coach.

“Find a coach that’s right for them and give them two or three years to build a squad of players who will challenge.”
