Parents slam new principal for suggesting girls who don’t wear tights are ‘lewd’

A PARENT has blasted a school’s new principal after she texted insisting girls in skirts wear black tights for “reasons of modesty and decency”.

The mother, whose daughter is a student, said the “sexist” wording suggested girls were being lewd and lewd if they didn’t wear them.

She added that the requirement for black tights was not in line with the official uniform policy of Longfield Academy, Darlington, Co. Durham.

The official uniform policy on the school’s website states, “If tights are worn, they must be solid color and not patterned,” meaning wearing them is not compulsory.

Principal Angela Sweeten said a formal consultation exercise on uniforms was underway at the secondary school, which has 891 students.

She added: “Over the past few weeks there have been a number of informal discussions about school uniforms.

“This has prompted me to write to parents/carers on Friday 24th June to start a formal consultation exercise.

“The process will also include input from students and staff.

“Any policy change will be communicated to the school community before the summer holidays.”
