More than 40 people – including 12 children – were injured after a red Ford Escape sped through a parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Sunday.

Families and performers celebrated a annual holiday event when the horror happened.

Police opened fire on the SUV as it leapt over the fence and sped up after the terrifying incident.

Local police chief Dan Thompson told a news conference that the vehicle hit more than 40 people, including several children.

Thompson also said a person of interest is in custody, noting that this is a “liquid investigation” and that the priority at this time is “working with the families” of the victims.

One witness, Angela O’Boyle, whose apartment overlooks the parade in suburban Milwaukee, told CNN: “All I heard was screams and then people shouted their baby’s name”.

She described how she “saw the car hitting the convoy that was just passing my balcony at the time”.

She said: “It hit at least two people instantly and ran over them.

“And then keep going down the road to People’s Park at the end of the block – and then keep going, it doesn’t stop.”

Brayden Kowalski, a 19-year-old witness, told Fox News he was with his family when he saw bodies being thrown around by the car.

Kowalski went on to say that he and his mother ran into the crowd to help the injured.

An order for the shelter was cancelled, and Thompson said the scene was “safe and secure.”

According to Sheriff Steve Howard, 11 adults and 12 pediatric patients were transported to six nearby hospitals.

‘BACK AND FORTH’
