THE Kremlin has banned iPhones over fears they could be hacked by CIA and GCHQ spies.
Putin’s aides have been given days to get rid of their Apple smartphones.
A source told Moscow newspaper Kommersant: “It’s all over for the iPhone.
“Either throw it away or give it to the kids.”
Employees had until April 1 to replace their US cellphones with phones using Russia’s Aurora software or the Android operating system.
The pro-Kremlin source claimed the iPhones are “more vulnerable to hacking and spying by Western experts compared to other smartphones.”
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “Smartphones should not be used for official business.”
He warned that every smartphone is “transparent” – suggesting it could be hacked.
He added: “Every smartphone has a fairly transparent mechanism, no matter what operating system it has Android or iOS.
“Of course they will not be used for official purposes.”
Deputy chief of Putin’s staff Sergei Kiriyenko imposed the iPhone ban on political officials working on next year’s Russian elections.
Apple declined to comment.
It follows bans in the UK, US and Europe on government workers from using TikTok on official phones over fears the app is collecting too much data.
