Spoilers ahead for ozark Season 4 part 2.

Ozark season 4 part 2 premiere recap

The first episode of ozark Season 4 Part 2, The Cousin of Death picks up right where Part 2 ended, with Ruth remembering her fond memories of Wyatt. She remembers a time when they bonded over music and joked about what they could do if they had some money. In the present, Ruth is willing to kill Javi and Javi has no idea.

Javi calls Marty and tells him that he needs to clean up his mess (aka Darlene and Wyatt) and meet up with Clare (Katrina Lenk) at Shaw Medical in Chicago the next day.

Of course, Wendy (Laura Linney) questions Marty (Jason Bateman) after he hangs up and is upset that he didn’t tell Javi about Ruth. Understandably, Marty doesn’t want Ruth to get hurt, but Wendy doesn’t care about Ruth. Wendy doesn’t want Javi killed and screwing up her deal with Omar. Marty points out that Ruth doesn’t even know what Javi looks like, which ultimately doesn’t matter.

Ruth has her own sources other than Wendy and Marty, and she drives to the motel to get answers from Jonah. Jonah Ruth nervously doesn’t want to say anything because he wants to protect her, but Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz) dumps her and tells her where Javi will be to meet her parents the next day.

Before Ruth leaves for Chicago, Wendy visits her and tries to talk her out of killing Javi. Ruth agrees, but quickly mumbles “lying shit” to herself as Wendy pulls away, suggesting she’s still going with her plan.

Marty calls Javi and lets him know the cops are all over Darlene’s house so he can’t clean up the bodies.

There’s a great montage of Ruth getting ready for Chicago, exchanging license plates, listening to the song “Represent” Nas, and getting a gun from Frank Jr., who tells her he’ll buy her a drink when she comes back . We also get a daydream from Ruth showing her arriving in Chicago and shooting Javi repeatedly in broad daylight. This is the clip we see in the ozark Season 4 part 2 trailer, and it’s not really happening.

While waiting for the Byrdes in Chicago, Javi calls his mother and lets her know he’ll be back in two days. It’s a brief conversation, but one that will come up again.

When Ruth arrives in Chicago, she has a heartbreaking phone conversation with Three (Carson Holmes), her cousin and Wyatt’s younger brother. Though she doesn’t reveal where she is or what she’s doing, Three understands and tells her Wyatt would hate it. There’s also a hilarious cameo by Killer Mike, whom Ruth meets at a diner and has an intense conversation with.

Elsewhere in the episode, Javi has a meeting with a businessman named Barton, who suggests he could anonymously donate to his business school, which offends Javi. He follows Barton to the restaurant’s bathroom, where he spanks him and flushes his head in a urinal multiple times. Javi is obviously an animal, but will he be killed that easily? Does he die in the premiere episode?

Does Javi die in Ozark season 4 part 2?

The short answer is yes, Javi dies in the Part 2 premiere. Ruth calls Marty while she is in Chicago where he tells her to go home. It seems like she almost does, until she watches the Byrdes continue to do business with high rollers and plan a life she and Wyatt wanted. She hosts a dinner between the Byrdes and Clare and demands that they go to the office so they aren’t all in the public eye.

At the office, Ruth has her call Javi to come under false pretenses, and she warns Clare about Wendy and Marty. She spits poison on them both, and it’s the whole truth. Of course, Javi shows up, but before he can barely get through the door, Ruth is on top of him and shoots him three times. He collapses and dies instantly.

Everything will change for the Byrdes now, but since Ruth is getting revenge, she doesn’t care. The final moments of the episode see her getting into her car and bursting into tears. Meanwhile, Wendy, Marty and Clare start cleaning up the mess.

That ozark Season 4 part 2 premiere is great. We’re getting an episode that focuses on the best part of the show: Ruth. From her perspective, we hear her favorite 90’s hip-hop that we know she loves, we really feel her devastation, and we get to enjoy Garner’s acting, which is fantastic. Ruth is an absolute badass and was underutilized in season 4 part 1 in my opinion. Part 2 starts off on a really high note.

You can stream all 14 episodes of ozark Season 4 on Netflix right now.
