A MICHIGAN Republican has been criticized by his own party after he confessed that he told his daughters to “lay back and enjoy it” if rape cannot be avoided.
Robert “RJ” Regan, 54, who is running for a seat in the House, made the comments Sunday in a Facebook live stream hosted by a conservative group.
He was in favor of canceling the 2020 presidential election, telling another participant that it was too late to do anything but her attitude was like what he told his three daughters. himself: “If rape is inevitable, you should just lie back and enjoy it.”
He also shares social media posts against disease eradication in 2021, according to The Times of Israel.
State Republican Chairman Ron Weiser said in a statement that “the history of Regan’s foolish, serious, and derogatory remarks, including his most recent comments, is simply one of beyond the pale. We are better than this as a party and I fully expect better than this of our candidates.”
Weiser congratulated Regan last week.
Similar condemnations were made by Kent County GOP Chairman, House of Representatives Speaker Jason Wentworth and Senator Mark Huizenga.
Democrats and the conservative Michigan Freedom Foundation had begun rebuking Regan the day before.
“As a Christian, public servant and father of two daughters, I find Robert Regan’s comments about sexual assault offensive and immoral, and I strongly denounce them.” , Huizenga said in a statement. a sovereign nation that runs counter to our national values, and his dissenting articles claiming the Jews control the banks and are behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks are worthy of praise. shame and disgust. “
If elected, he will serve through 2022 and said he will also run later this year for a full two-year term. The results of the primaries, for which Regan won 71 votes out of about 7,300 votes, are unofficial until they are confirmed by the authorities.
Democrats said Republicans should try to remove Regan from the special general election vote, though it was not immediately clear if that would be allowed under the law.
“Anything that is lacking shows support for this kind of toxic rhetoric,” said Kent County Democratic Party Chairman Bill Saxton.
In the past, one of Regan’s stepdaughters was Twitter to urge people not to vote for him.
“If you’re in Michigan and over 18, for god’s love, don’t vote for my dad for state representative. tell everyone,” Stephanie Regan tweeted in 2020.
“Do a quick fb or google search to find information about his campaign,” she continued in a follow-up tweet. “I don’t feel safe sharing more information regarding his beliefs, but find him and just read for yourself.”
Regan admitted that his rape analogy was less “smooth” in an interview with Bridge Michigan on Monday.
“Sometimes my words are not as smooth and polished as politicians because I am not a politician. I’m working on it,” Regan is said to have said.
