One of Sam Heughantheir longtime friends joined in playing together his biggest on-screen enemy, a new interview reveals.
In a recent Q&A for London magazine Square miles, OutlanderThe leading man was interviewed by his friend of many years, Lucifer star Tom Ellis. The wide-ranging conversation included Heughan’s background, his acting difficulties before landing his current gig, and his preferences for both whiskey and physicality, among other topics.
At one point, Ellis revealed that he had auditioned for the Starz series before it premiered, “not for Jamie Fraser, but for the Tobias Menzies part, Black Jack Randall,” he said.
The statement was news to Heughan, who replied, “First, man, I’m not sure how I’ve felt with you, I don’t know, ‘attacking’ me, shall we?” Fans who watched Outlander knew from the beginning that he was referring to the final part of Season 1, in which Heughan Jamie was raped by Randall at Wentworth Prison, an apparently startling incident that the show detailed.
Menzies played both Black Jack, a sadistic British officer, and his future centuries-old relative, historian Frank Randall, on the show.
After explaining how “difficult” filming that scene would be for them, Heughan added: “Actually, you’d be brilliant at it. [playing the part] because Frank Randall is this charming, lovable character and then Black Jack, the other part that you have to play, is just violent… Of course, Tobias did a great job, but that would be very different. . ”
Heughan also commented that he initially thought Starz’s adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s novel would last “two years at most,” but now “we’ve turned eight years old and we’re still going.” .” Outlander back for Season 6 on Sunday, March 6, 2022. (To go here for a sneak peek.)
