‘Our sport is sick’ – Real Madrid President Perez promotes European Super League AGAIN despite heavy backlash

REAL MADRID president Florentino Perez has claimed football is “sick” as he continues to promote the controversial European Super League project.

Perez was the chairman of the outrageous ESL initiative that would have seen Real, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham break free and form their own league own.

However, the plans were scrapped after the angry reaction from fans, players, legends and pundits in 2021 when all clubs except Los Blancos, Barca and Juve withdrew.

The Spanish businessman insists on the unpopular project as he claims changes are still needed in the sport.

Speaking at the club’s AGM, Perez said: “To solve a problem, you first have to recognize that you have a problem. Our sport is sick. It is losing its leadership as a global sport.

“We must not be confused by the impact of Real Madrid’s European run when we were involved in seven games of the highest intensity and interest.

“It was the result of the draw and the quality and size of our team. It was a spectacle that helped bring back the excitement in viewers.

“That’s why we believe that European competitions need to change to offer fans the highest level of play between the strongest teams and the best players throughout the year.”

Perez believes the ESL would follow tennis’ lead as he argues that some of the world’s best players clash against some of the biggest clubs far more often than Real.

The likes of Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer have indeed played the horns countless times, but tennis and soccer are very different sports.

Perez added: “In tennis, Nadal and Federer have played 40 times in 15 years. Nadal and Djokovic have played 59 games in 16 years.

“In football, in 67 years, we’ve only played against Liverpool nine times. We’ve played against Chelsea four times in European history. What’s the point in depriving the fans of all those games?”

Perez continued, “We were top in all sports and now we’ve dropped to 13th place. We were overtaken by 12 clubs from American sports.

“You have to do something very well in the United States and very badly in Europe. Football is losing the global entertainment battle against other sports and other platforms.

“We need professional, modern, transparent management that is not based on old structures from the last century.

“Recently Chairman of the European Clubs’ Association [Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi] said – speaking about the Super League – that Real Madrid are afraid of the competition.

“Perhaps the President of the ECA needs a reminder of who Real Madrid is. Competition is in our DNA.”
