Oscars 2022: Best Makeup and Hairstyling Predictions

It’s a race between the Brando-inspired Baron Harkonnen of “Dune” and the unrecognizable Jared Leto of “House of Gucci. Constantly updated.

IndieWire The Craft Top of the Line

This season, the hair and makeup race is led by “Sand dunesThe intricate work of prosthetics by “nightmare” baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) resists Jared Leto’s unrecognizable transformation as the disrespected Paolo character in “House of Gucci”. The shortlist also includes transformations of Jessica Chastain as Tammy Faye Bakker in “Tammy Faye’s Eyes,” Emma Stone as a ’70s punk-inspired version of the beloved baddie’s character. Disney, “Cruella,” and Eddie Murphy’s Afro-punk return look like Prince Akeem from “Coming 2 America.”

“Dune” (Warner Bros.) offers an incredible array of work from Denis Villeneuve’s makeup, hair and prosthetic designer Donald Mowat. But the standout, of course, is Baron Harkonnen, the often-naked, 600-pounder, inspired by Marlon Brando’s gorilla hybrid look in “Apocalypse Now” and “The Island of Dr. Moreau”. Mowat tapped the team of Swedish prosthetic artists Love Larson and Eva von Bahr to create the intricate suit, which requires a large volume of silicone, with plaster casts to support the frame and maintain its shape. silicone, while the head and shoulders are made separately. A seven-hour process for the complete suit is then performed using separate sections for the neck, head, chin, cheeks, earlobes, and prosthetics on the knuckles. All in all, it’s a remarkable transformation for the evil villain.

In “House of Gucci” (United Artists Releasing), prosthetic designer Göran Lundströn creatively transforms Leto into the bald and chubby fashion designer Paolo. He did some reverse engineering to erase the look of the thin, long-haired actor (who was wearing the fat suit), with his three-piece cap, wig, more than half a dozen prosthetics. and the mustache has been edited. But to get to the set ready to perform as Paolo, Leto asked Lundströn to apply his tour de force prosthetic elsewhere, hidden from the rest of the cast.

To recreate Tammy Faye Bakker’s unique features, hair and style for “Tammy Faye’s Eyes” (Searchlight Pictures), makeup artist Linda Dowds, hair stylist Stephanie Ingram and designer Prosthetic designer Justin Raleigh worked in tandem to perfect the famous look. Raleigh and his team at Fractured FX designed the prostheses that alter the overall anatomy of Chastain and Andrew Garfield, to closely match the real Jim and Tammy, along with the continuity of the actors. as they age throughout the film. Ingram custom-made 10 wigs for Tammy’s various looks, including intricate combinations of different wigs to create Bakker’s trademark, multi-layered fluff.

Hair and makeup designer Nadia Stacey (“The Favourite”) did a bit of reverse engineering to create Stone’s ’70s punk look in Disney’s origin story “Cruella” (Disney). The idea was towards the ultimate iconic black and white two-tone hairstyle, black eyeshadow, primer and red lips. Stacey started with a black and white hairdo and a little makeup for Cruella’s upcoming party in a gorgeous red dress. She creates a mask using jewelry and makeup as a deception. But Stacey’s most punk-inspired look is the black-engraved “The Future” mask on Stone’s face, combined with the glittering red lipstick that appeared on the legendary Sex Pistols album cover. , “Never Mind The Bollocks”.
