One of the coolest police cars Japan has ever had is not what you would expect

Japan produces some of the most famous vehicles in the world, but its coolest police car wouldn’t be associated with the Land of the Rising Sun. With speed being an important factor in pursuit cars, it’s only natural for police departments to have a little pizzazz in their patrol fleets. The thing is, one of the most popular police cars in Japan isn’t a JDM icon, it’s an American staple. Enter the Ford Mustang Mach 1 police car, Tochigi Prefecture’s intimidating authority on the streets in the 1970s (via Hagerty).

Unlike other drool-worthy patrol car concepts, including the Porsche police cruiser concept, this American muscle car had been in service for well over a decade. In fact, the Japanese police Mustang Mach 1 was such a popular model that it has appeared in various media and even been turned into a literal figure – a 1:18 die-cast model, to be precise. Given Ford’s reputation for producing some of the fastest patrol cars on the road, it’s no surprise that a Mustang Mach 1 served as a fitting candidate for the police force. However, this begs the question: How did the classic ’70s Mustang get into the hands of Japan’s Tochigi Prefectural Police Department in the first place?

What happened to the Japanese police Mustang?

With a monstrous big-block V8 engine, it’s safe to say that not many villains in domestic vehicles have been able to outrun the rampaging Tochigi Prefectural Pony. The Japanese Mustang police car is a 1973 Mach 1 Cobra Jet, one of the few examples legally exported in the ’70s, according to Hagerty. Ford North America manager Mark Wilson surmised that the Mustang Mach 1s came into the country between 1972 and 1973 and were likely marketed to American troops who remained there after the Vietnam War. As for the oddly foreign Japanese police car, it was apparently donated to the prefecture, according to local Asahi Shimbun news outlet.

After more than a decade in service, this pony is now tied up in the showroom at the Tochigi Driver License Center in Kanuma — and it’s not the only American automobile in the showroom to have fulfilled its overseas duties. Right next to the famous Mustang is a Chevrolet that has been in the service of Tochigi Prefecture for more than two decades – and was even used to escort the Emperor. Of course, that doesn’t mean Japan’s police cars are mostly American muscle; There are some hefty JDM stars in his lineup too.

Japanese police cars don’t fool around

Most of Tochigi Prefecture’s patrol cars, including sporty pursuit vehicles, were donations from local companies and automakers. In 2018, Tochigi Prefectural Police held a celebration to introduce a Nissan GT-R R35 donated by a local resident. This isn’t the first time either, as the same person – who happens to be an executive at the company – has also donated a luxury Lexus LC 500, according to the local outlet. Aside from wealthy individuals, it is good that Tochigi Prefecture is also surrounded by automobile factories of well-known brands such as Nissan and Honda, both of which also became benefactors.

The prefecture alone now has several exotic sports cars made available by their respective manufacturers to be converted into pursuit vehicles, including a Honda NSX and a Nissan Fairlady Z. They’re not just production variants either – the Japanese police even have them Race spec 370Z NISMOs on duty as seen in Nissan’s YouTube video. Although these sporty Japanese police cars might be in action, don’t expect them to be the local police’s daily drivers anytime soon. The local outlet reports that Japan’s expressway unit still uses the humble Toyota Crown sedan for patrols. Other more common patrol units in the Japanese police fleet include Daihatsu Hijet vans, Honda police bikes, and a less conspicuous Mazda RX-8 for pursuit (via Autoweek). However, in the sea of JDM patrol cars, the Japanese police Mustang still stood out as a lone ranger who could make two countries proud.
