One million families qualify for automatic EBT pandemic benefits up to $128 a month

Children in grades K-12 are eligible for P-EBT benefits, by state Department of Children & Family Services.

Students are eligible for assistance if they would normally get free or reduced price meals, or if they haven’t received their meals because of school breaks during the pandemic.

Children participating in the fully virtual learning program are eligible for $127.80 per month.

Amounts range from $21.30 to $127.80 for students who miss school for the day due to Covid.

Officials in Louisiana sent grants worth more than $811 million to approximately one million students in the second round.

Families who received P-EBT during the 2020-21 school year will receive their benefits on the same card.

For families who receive food stampsknown as the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, benefits will be issued on a separate EBT (electronic benefit transfer) card.

P-EBT benefits are available for nine months from the date they are issued and are non-transferable.

If you lose your P-EBT card, you can call 1-888-997-1117 to request a new card or access the LifeInCheck mobile app.

Louisiana is not the only state to help students as last month, children in North Carolina began receiving P-EBT benefits, according to EDNC.

Officials in Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohioand Wisconsin is also distributing benefits throughout the 2021-22 school year.


The program was created to help feed children during school closures at the height of the pandemic.

To receive the program’s free lunch, students must come from households with incomes at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line.

To have a reduced-price meal, children must come from families that fall between 130-185% of the federal poverty line.

This program is similar to food stamps in the same way that money is added to an EBT card.

About 41 million Americans in low-income households receive assistance to buy groceries.
