A MAN was shot dead and another injured in a spate of violence at petrol stations in recent months that has killed 11 people at the pumps.
Police officers arrived at the Alfa gas station in Roslindale, Boston, around 9:47 p.m. Friday night and found that two people had been shot dead.
One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a local hospital, Deputy Police Commissioner James Miller said.
The man killed was later identified as Dreshaun Johnson by Heather Powell, his mentor at Roslindale Community Center. CBS Boston reports.
“I still can’t imagine how that could have happened to someone so loved,” Powell said. “Dre was a star. He didn’t deserve this to happen to him.”
“I’m still trying to process what happened on my own and all the youth leaders in the community are definitely grieving right now. This is a great loss for Roslindale.”
Miller added that the shooting is being investigated and “does not appear to be a random act of violence.”
He added that anyone with information about the shooting should call the department’s Homicide Division at 617-343-4470.
Those wishing to report anonymously should call the CrimeStoppers hotline at 1-800-494-TIPS.
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we have too many guns on our streets at the moment,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden told reporters at the scene after arriving from the scene of another shooting in Revere was that had happened in the same hour. “This is a very tragic incident. One is no longer with us.”
The shooting in a place as public and ordinary as a gas station “must be scary for residents,” Hayden added.
“So far this year, police have pulled more than 160 illegal guns from the streets of Boston, including five loaded handguns from youths this week,” he later wrote in an email statement. “Now again we see the weapons of destruction killing one person, wounding another and sending bullets flying in an open-air business environment where people go about their daily routines. I urge anyone with knowledge of those involved to assist the investigation. This is a societal problem that requires a societal response.”
