ONE Championship: Gordon Ryan suggests a world BJJ title in ONE “would be great”

Gordon Ryan trust A championship should add a Brazilian jiu-jitsu world title to the list of gold belts on offer.

Consensus submissions grapple with GOAT slamming the idea in a recent Instagram post. Ryan uploaded a video of his longtime friend and grappling expert Garry Tonon harness the Shinya Aoki wizard through the heel hook. Notes read:

“Who wants to see @garrytonon as the @onechampionship mma champion AND the jiu jitsu champion? It would be nice if they also had a grappling belt. “

Ryan has been honing his skills with Tonon for years. The 26-year-old American was pivotal throughout Tonon’s camp as he braced himself for a match against Thanh Le for the featherweight world title. That clash is expected to take place later this year.

The pair, along with Nick Rodriguez and Gordon’s younger brother Nicky, are part of the ‘Danaher Suicide Squad’ led by world-renowned trainer and 5th Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt John John Danaher. Together, they created a series of world championships.

Tonon’s titles include the IBJJF BJJ World Championship, two IBJJF World No-Gi Championships and five Eddie Bravo Invitational championships.

However, as Ryan’s Instagram post shows, he clearly wants to see ONE Brazilian jiu-jitsu world title in the picture soon. It may well be the most stylish world championship belt in their trophy cabinet.

Tonon’s career in ONE so far

Tonon made his professional MMA debut in a promotion match in March 2018 against Filipino boxer Richard Corminal. The 30-year-old put aside his grappling tricks and jutsu and relied on his outstanding skills to secure a TKO victory over Corminal.

Evolve MMA and Team Team star Renzo Gracie switched the plot in the ensuing battles, showcasing his ruthless abilities on the ground. He closed out his debut year with two other finishes, a choke from behind to Rahul Raju and a slash in front of Sung Jong Lee.

2019 saw the American boxer add a few more standout stops in victory than Anthony Engelen and Yoshiki Nakahara. Tonon extended his impeccable resume to 6-0 with a win over Koyomi Matsushima in December 2020.

Tonon is currently the featherweight 2nd contender, ahead of the former king Martin Nguyen (No.3), Tang Kai (No.4) and Yoshiki Nakahara (No.5).

Sitting higher than him in the team is Kim Jae Woong. Korea’s knockout artist will face Tang Kai at ONE: Only brave on January 28. If Tonon beats Thanh Le to become the featherweight world champion and Kim can win against the Chinese star, the pair will intersect in 2022.

Meanwhile, Gordon Ryan has also signed on with the promotion. He hasn’t had his commercial debut yet. ONE Championship: Gordon Ryan suggests a world BJJ title in ONE “would be great”
