Omicron is 90% milder for people with booster vaccine as cases fall on third day

‘Schools must close last and open first if lockdown occurs’

Professor Russell Viner, a member of SAGE, has warned against prolonged school closures to protect children’s health.

The former president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health believes schools should be given the resources to stay afloat if Covid cases rise again.

Half of all schools in the UK turned to teachers to get the coverage they needed because of staff absences.

Professor Viner, from University College London, is an expert in child and adolescent health and claims that school closures pose a “high risk” to children.

Writing for the British Medical Journal, Prof Viner said: “There is now clear evidence that pandemic-related school closures harm children.

“Prolonged school closures carry a heightened risk of poor mental health, obesity, child abuse, as well as learning disabilities.

“The National Study of Mental Health for Children and Young People shows that the likelihood of a mental health disorder in UK children and young adults has increased from 1/9 to 1/6 during the pandemic.

“The National Child Measurement Program found that childhood obesity in the UK increased by 4.5 per cent between 2019 and 2020.

“School closures reduce the visibility of children at risk, with medical referral rates to protect children falling by 36%-39% during the pandemic.

“Due to sensitive stages of brain development and cognitive development, this generation of children’s learning loss during the pandemic cannot simply be compensated for by catching up on work at a later date and will contribute to poorer health and lower life expectancy in the long run. ”
