North Korea fires a nuclear-capable missile OVER Japan for the first time in 5 years, causing panicked residents to flee for cover

NORTH KOREA has fired a nuclear-capable missile over Japan for the first time in five years, causing panicked residents to flee for cover.

Locals were urged to seek safety underground as the horrific missile soared over the nation before landing in the Pacific Ocean.

During Tuesday’s flight of the missile, officials issued evacuation notices and suspended some public transportation.

Trains were halted as the long-range ballistic missile flew over the neighboring country after being fired from Jagang province.

The Japanese government warned citizens to take cover after its coast guard reported North Korea’s launch of the nuclear-capable missile.

The 2,800-mile journey is believed to be the longest traveled by a North Korean missile during a weapons test.

Its ability to travel such a distance shows it has enough range to hit even the US Pacific region of Guam – home of its military bases.

Panic quickly spread across Japan after a series of 911 calls urged people to get to safety.

A statement from the country’s prime minister’s office warned residents “to evacuate inside a building or underground.”

But authorities didn’t have to intervene in countermeasures to destroy the missile, which later landed in the Pacific Ocean.

There were no reports of damage to aircraft or ships, although they reportedly landed 1,990 miles off the northern Japanese coast.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida later called the shooting a “reckless act” which he “strongly condemns” after his people got into trouble.

Officials warned North Korea “poses a serious challenge to the entire international community” amid the surprise shot — the first time a missile has passed over Japan since 2017.

South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff have warned that Kim Jong-un is likely to continue conducting worrisome rocket launches to anger his enemies.

But the bold power play will only deepen North Korea’s international isolation, prompting Seoul and Washington to step up their deterrence capabilities.

Japan’s top government spokesman Hirokazu Matsuno added, “North Korea’s series of actions, including repeated launches of ballistic missiles, threaten the peace and security of Japan, the region and the international community.”

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said he consulted with Japanese officials over the phone after the missile launch.

Kim claps back

He reiterated his nation’s “iron pledge to defend Japan” and pledged to step up efforts to limit North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.

Both South Korea and Japan quickly assembled for their own emergency National Security Council meetings.

North Korea’s dramatic show of force is believed to have been in retaliation for South-US military exercises in Japan last week.

The military muscle flexing led to the Allies holding trilateral anti-submarine drills with Japanese naval forces last week.

Kim Jong-un is reportedly viewing the training drills as a rehearsal for an invasion – he is seen firing back with a nuclear warning.

Before launch on Tuesday, Hwasong-12’s 2,300-mile flight in 2017 was North Korea’s longest.

It has previously tested ICBMs at steep angles to make them fly shorter.

Earlier this month Japan said it would resume evacuation drills for residents amid the spike in North Korean launches.
