As shown in Second trailer for “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, Alfred Molina’s Dr. Otto Octavius is back, 17 years after his death in 2004’s “Spider-Man 2”. Though, unlike the version from that universe, saves himself and sacrifices him. brave, the version we see in the MCU looks terrible. In fact, he even fought Spider-Man and managed to knock down the wall bull with his mechanical arm. However, instead of delivering the finishing blow, he was momentarily stunned when he saw the human face below, exclaiming, “I’m not Peter Parker.”
The editing of this scene in the “No Way Home” teaser leads us to believe that this is simply Doc Ock’s reaction to seeing a Spider-Man whose face is different from the one he knows. However, some MCU fans believe this is a subtle hint that the actor behind Spidey in “Spider-Man 2” – Tobey Maguire – will actually appear in “No Way Home”. Although neither Sony nor Marvel Studios believes in such ideas, rumors about both Maguire and Andrew Garfield back when respective incarnations of Spider-Man persisted online, promoting such interpretations of promotional material.
At the end of the day, there’s no solid evidence that Tobey Maguire is starring in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”. Thus, until evidence to the contrary, Doc Ock’s catchy quote sounds like a nod to his famous rival.
