Officials said Thursday an investigation is underway after at least two students allegedly endured hateful comments during a girls’ basketball game between Lakewood and Barnegat Schools in Houston. New Jersey.
Officials said one of the girls was taunted during the game against Barnegat as “homeless” because she didn’t have basketball sneakers, while the other was allegedly black throughout. contest, officials said.
Both “very upset students” reported what happened to their coaches, the Lakewood School District said, adding that they do not accept such treatment.
Incident reports of bias have been filed with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletes Association (NJSIAA) and Barnegat School District, Lakewood said.
The superintendent of the Barnegat Town School District said this type of alleged behavior is “not tolerated” in their schools and that they are “working to determine the validity of these accusations.”
“This has been a complete shock to the district and our team,” Barnegat Town School District Superintendent Brian Latwis said in a statement. “Preferably, these allegations should be brought to the attention of the referee and coach during the game so that they can be resolved immediately.”
“We take these allegations very seriously and have a detailed harassment, intimidation and bullying policy,” Latwis added.
A spokesperson for Lakewood School is also looking into the matter.
Meanwhile, basketball sneakers are being purchased for their women’s team, as 10 out of 19 players don’t have the right shoes, the Lakewood official added.
