According to police in the Maharashtra region of western India, all relatives are believed to have died after consuming poison.

However, the true cause of death will only be known after a full investigation, reports the Times of India.

The brothers’ two houses were just 1.5 km apart in Mhaisal village in Sangli district, some 350 km from Mumbai.

Preliminary reports, according to NDTV, suggest the couple may have struck a suicide pact after falling into huge debts.

Their bodies were discovered when a village girl went to one of the houses to find out why no one had come to get milk from them for several days.

The dead include the Popat brothers and Dr. Manik Vanmore, her elderly mother, her two wives and a total of four children.

Popat worked as a teacher while Manik was a veterinarian, police said.

Six of the bodies were found at Manik’s home, and suicide notes discovered at both properties are being analyzed.

“It looks like the family members of the two brothers have ended their lives,” said Inspector General Manoj Kumar Lohiya.

“According to the information received so far, both brothers had borrowed money from different people.”

The senior police officer added: “Although it looks like a suicide pact, we are investigating the case from all sides as this is a serious incident.”

Times Now News reports that the deceased are identified as Popat Yallappa (52), a veterinarian by trade, Sangeeta Popat (48), Archana Popat (30), Shubham Popat (28), Manik Yallappa (49), Rekha Manik (45) and Aditya Manik Van (15), Anita Manik (28) and Akkatai (72).

The family members were reportedly last seen alive on Monday morning.

“Nine bodies were recovered in Mhaisal village, Sangli district, of which three bodies were recovered from one house and six bodies from the other house,” according to local official Dixit Gedam.

“The forensic team is on site.”

Another official added that the bodies were photographed before being sent away for autopsy while other procedures are currently underway.

The Vanmore’s neighbors said the family took out loans from a number of villagers and neighbors.

Police are preparing to question people from whom the family borrowed money.
