TAMPA BAY’s win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday was marred by a controversial late call from officials.
Tom Brady and co emerged victorious 21:15 after a hard fought match at Raymond James Stadium.
But it was a rough the passer call against the Falcons late in the fourth quarter that got the NFL world talking.
Just over three minutes from the end of the game, Grady Jarrett rushed through to sack Brady on one of the plays.
A successful sack would have given the Falcons back the ball with plenty of time to field for the winner.
But Jarrett was deemed overly physical by officials as he knocked the 45-year-old QB to the ground.
And referee Jerome Boger’s team threw their flags to send the Atlanta sideline into a frenzy.
The call gave the Bucs a first down at the Falcons 31, allowing them to end the game.
Falcons players were furious after the competition and didn’t hold back their thoughts.
Running back Caleb Huntley said: “It was crazy because it was just a regular sack.
“It wasn’t anything special on Grady’s part, but I think the referee saw it differently.
“Had we gotten the ball, we probably wouldn’t be sitting here sad and angry about the outcome of this game.”
But referee Boger stepped in front of the cameras and explained why he made his decision.
Boger said: What I had was a defenseman grabbed the quarterback while he was still in the pocket and unnecessarily threw him to the ground.
“On that basis I made my decision.”
However, much of the NFL world disagreed and fans took to social media to vent their frustration, with many feeling preferential treatment was given to Brady.
And some even thought Brady stepped on Jarrett during the play.
One wrote: “Tom Brady tries to kick an opposing player, immediately stands up and begs for a rude call from the passerby and gets it, that’s the most Tom f***ing Brady thing I’ve ever seen.
While another said: “Tua was knocked down 10000 times harder than Brady with no call…but his old a** gets inhaled when a flag comes out.”
A third added: “If anything Brady should have been tagged for trying to kick Grady. The NFL should be held accountable for this. But they won’t.”
The win puts the Bucs 3-2 after Brady finished the game with 35 completions for 351 yards and a touchdown.
Tampa Bay will continue its NFL campaign in Week 6 with a tough match against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
