Newport Beach police helicopter plunges into water as fire crews and rescuers race to the scene

The Newport Beach Fire Department was responding to a police helicopter crash as fire crews and first responders raced to the scene.

The Huntington Beach Police Department confirmed the crash in a tweet, saying it was their HB1 police helicopter.

“Rescue efforts are underway and more information will be released as it becomes available,” the statement concluded.

NBCLA reporter Katherine Picazo tweeted that the Newport Beach Fire Department was at the scene of the reported helicopter crash.

“The helicopter is believed to be a police helicopter. They are still working to rescue a trapped victim.”

Many people took to Twitter to share their accounts of the incident.

“My God…we just witnessed a helicopter plunge into the water at Newport beach 🙁 looks like a police helicopter.. rescue mission in progress,” @justinmartin tweeted. .

Another user tweeted a photo of the water, where multiple flashing lights could be seen.

Willie Javier Sparks tweeted: “Just witnessed a helicopter lose control and plunge into the water in Newport Beach. I’ve never been so shaken. I hope they’re okay.”

The investigation is underway.
