Joelinton allegedly failed a breathalyzer test and was charged with drunk driving.
The Brazilian appears before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court today.
He arrived this morning in a smart black suit and black tie.
It comes less than 48 hours after he scored the winning goal against Southampton in the Magpies’ Carabao Cup semi-final.
Joelinton was bought by Newcastle for £40million from German club Hoffenheim in 2019.
Since then he has become instrumental to the Premier League team.
Manager Eddie Howe transitioned Joelinton from his center forward position to a left midfield role last season.
Since then, the footballer has gone from strength to strength.
Northumbria Police said: “Just before 1.20am today officers stopped a vehicle in the area of Ponteland Road in Newcastle and arrested the occupant.
“Joelinton Cassio, 26, of Ponteland, has since been charged with driving in excess of alcohol.
“He is due to appear before the judges in Newcastle on January 26.”
Newcastle United are aware of the incident but have not commented.
