The Toon are believed to be looking for two midfielders – a defensively oriented player and a more versatile option.

A wide forward, a centre-back and a full-back are other areas Newcastle are keen to strengthen.

But center of the park is a priority for the Northeast team as Howe prepares to push Bruno Guimaraes into a more advanced position.

Accordingly the athleteTonali’s “tactical flexibility” appeals to Newcastle – who have pledged £43m to lure him away from Italian giants Milan.

23-year-old Tonali – who is also interested in Chelsea – joined Milan on loan from Brescia three years ago before finalizing the move in 2021.

He helped the Rossoneri win their first Scudetto in more than a decade last year.

And he made 48 appearances for Stefano Pioli’s side this season as Milan reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2007.

His impressive performances have made him a regular for Italy U21s.

Alongside Tonali, Newcastle are also heavily linked with a move from Leicester playmaker James Maddison.

But they are dealing with Tottenham, who are keen on signing the England international.
