Eddie Howe replacing Steve Bruce as coach at St. James’ Park in November and has been handed a huge transfer orchestra in the January window to bolster his struggling squad.

They quickly rounded up Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid to strengthen the backline.

Then a £25m transfer for striker Chris Wood from Burnley followed by more threat on goal after Callum Wilson’s injury.

Things then remained quiet as the day deadline dragged on until they finally made another breakthrough.

Brazilian international midfielder, Bruno GuimaraesThe 24-year-old finally completed a move to Newcastle on Sunday in a deal worth £43m.

Despite having secured three new additions, Howe still wants more and the defense remains top of mind.

They started the last day of the window by signing the left-back Matt Targett on loan until the end of the season from Aston Villa.

And they still managed to get another fresh face ahead of schedule, completing a £13m deal for Brighton defender Dan Burn.

However, speaking ahead of the game against Villa, the club’s all-time top goalscorer admitted that those five new additions may not be enough to save them.

Shearer said to Daily mail: “They fell into underinvestment for the past 14 years.

“The player change hasn’t come close to what it should have been and could have happened so they’re in that scenario, but of course Eddie was brought in to try and keep Newcastle up. .

“He wasn’t brought in to knock them down, he was brought in to help keep Newcastle going and they dropped out. I’m pretty sure if you go and ask Burnley, Norwich or Watford if they can have that money they’ll turn you down.

“Newcastle are in a very fortunate position in terms of what they have financially right now and the players they have signed, but they need more than that.

“The proof is there for all to see. There’s every possibility we’ll be relegated but that’s where they are. ”

The legendary striker added: “I think it’s increasingly likely that there will be three from four in the relegation battle – Newcastle, Watford, Burnley and Norwich.

“I know Everton are getting hooked on it but it seems more and more likely that it will be three from four.

“Newcastle’s spending at the minute is fantastic because we haven’t seen it in a long time but the harsh reality is they need more than that, let’s see.”
